SOIL CONVERSATIONS präsentiert neun künstlerische Positionen aus Südafrika und Deutschland, die sich mit unserer Beziehung zum Boden als Lebensgrundlage und zur Erde als Trägerin von Erinnerung, Identität und Zukunft befassen. In der Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte und möglichen Zukunftsszenarien wird der Boden als etwas Rhizomatisches betrachtet. Wie lässt sich Bodenals Raum der Bedeutungs- und Identitätsbildung denken? Als Raum für Ausgrabungen? Als Archiv der Geschichte und als politischer Akteur?

Unter dem Leitmotiv „Soil is everything” (Boden ist alles) lenkt die Ausstellung den Fokus auf die Materialität des Bodens, auf dem wir stehen und unser Leben aufbauen, als einen Moment der genauen Beobachtung, in dem Details, Teile und Partikel zu Spuren eines Ganzen werden. Die Ausstellung untersucht die Beziehung zwischen uns selbst und der Umgebung, in der wir leben, sowohl im digitalen als auch im analogen Bereich. Themen wie Land, Geschichte, Spiritualität und der Körper — als physische Manifestation und theoretische Repräsentation — sind integrale Bestandteile der Kunstwerke. Mit künstlerischen Arbeiten, die sich linearen Sichtweisen widersetzen, versucht Soil Conversations, die Pluralität der Vergangenheit und Zukunftsszenarien zu erforschen, die ins Unbekannte führen. Die Besuchenden sind eingeladen, sich mit dem Spekulativen auseinanderzusetzen: als einer Möglichkeit, das Hier und Jetzt zu definieren, und als eine andere Form der Beziehung zwischen uns und der Welt — zwischen dem inneren und dem äußeren Raum.

Im Anschluss an die Präsentation in der Galerie im Körnerpark findet die Ausstellung vom 27. August bis 18. November 2023 in der JOHANNESBURG ART GALLERY statt.

SOIL CONVERSATIONS

SOIL CONVERSATIONS presents a series of propositions, stretching over time and space. Concerning history and possible futures while thinking with soil as something rhizomatic, it questions the concept of linearity, making a case for the interstitial. What does it mean to think with — and of — soil as a space of meaning and identity making? As a space for excavation? As an archive of history and a political actor?

Under the proposition “soil is everything” the exhibition offers a look at the granularity of the ground we stand and build life on, as a moment of close observation, where details, parts and particles become traces of a whole. The exhibition investigates the relationship between ourselves and the environment we live in, both in digital and analogue spheres. Topics of land, history, spirituality and the body — as physical manifestation and theoretical representation — are integral parts of the artworks part of Soil Conversations.

By defying a linear ontology of history, Soil Conversations seeks to explore the plurality of the past, and future scenarios which lead into the unknown, aiming to engage with the speculative as a defining position of the here and now, and as a relationship between us and the world — the inner and outer space.

Following the presentation at Galerie im Körnerpark, the exhibition will take place at JOHANNESBURG ART GALLERY from August 27 to November 18, 2023.
